Sony Librie- 전자책의 전망에 대한 담론

한달전 IDAS의 김원택 교수님으로부터 2월 2일 대구의 EXCO에서 있게 될 HCI
(Human Computer Interaction) 학회의 한 세션인 'E-Book Design Perspective'의
패널로 참가해달라는 요청을 받았다. 주제강연의 내용은 소니에서 작년에 출시한
전자책-Librie에 대한 것으로 개발자인 소니의 Yoshitaka Ukita씨가 강연을 하고,
이에 대하여 패널리스트로서의 의견발표와 토론을 하는 일이다.
카이스트의 이건표 교수님과 삼성전자 UI 디자인분야의 수석이신 오경순님과 더불어
각자의 전문분야를 대변하는 생각들을 나눌 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것 같아 요청을
수락하기로 하였다. 한가지 우려가 있다면, 모든 발표와 토론을 영어로 진행한다는
점인데... 새로운 도전이라 생각되어 이에 대한 스트레스를 감내하기로 마음을 먹었다.

늘 그렇듯이, 쫓기는 시간과의 게임에서 어떻게든 이겨보려는 노력은 결국 대구로
가는 기차 안에서의 1시간 40분을 어떻게 활용하느냐까지로 이어지고, 쑥쑥 줄어들어
가고 있는 노트북 배터리 용량에 침이 말랐지만 아슬아슬하게 착오없이 발표자료를
마무리하여 대구 EXCO에 도착하였다. KTX... 서울에서 대구까지의 이동시간을
획기적으로 줄여놓았으니 기차여행만의 느긋함은 이제 옛일이 된 듯 하다.

11시 20분부터 예정되어 있던 우키타씨와의 오찬을 마친 후 1시간 20분부터 시작된
주제강연의 요지는 다음과 같다.

소니에서 2004년 봄 출시한 전자책 Librie는 e-ink라는 혁신적인 기술을 근간으로
하고 있는데, 종이 위에 인쇄된 글을 읽듯 편안한 화면 가독성(6인치 스크린/800X600,
170 dpi, 200%까지 글자크기 확대 가능)을 제공한다는 것이 주요 사안이다.
또한 배터리 용량을 효율적으로 활용하는 방법을 고안, 화면이 바뀔 때, 즉 책의
페이지를 넘기는 데에만 배터리 소모가 필요할 뿐 글을 읽는 동안에는 전혀 배터리
소모가 되지 않아 AAA 사이즈 배터리 4개로 1만 페이지를 읽을 수 있다는 점도
주요 사안 중의 하나이다. 평균적인 책의 크기(126X190X13mm)와 무게
(케이스포함 300g, 책만190g)를 지니고 있으며, 약 500권 분량의 책을 저장,
자유로이 검색할 수 있는 기능을 가지고 있다. 컨텐츠 제공방식은 Timebook Town
이라는 이름의 온라인 북클럽에 가입하여 컨텐츠를 구입, PC에 다운로드를 한후,
메모리스틱을 이용하여 다시 전자책에 옮기는 방법을 취하고 있는데, 2개월 후면
데이터가 자동 소멸되도록 프로그램되어 있다.

강연은 일본어로 진행하고 한국어로 순차통역을 하는 방식이라 좀 시간이 걸리고
내용 역시 다소 소니 상품선전의 뉘앙스가 강하였다고 보여지므로 강연장을 가득 메운
4~500 관객의 기대를 충족시킬 수 있었을지는... 미지수다. 이는, 사전에 내용을 교류한
적이 없이 각자 준비해온 세 사람의 패널들의 발표를 보더라도 짐작할 수 있는 일이었다.

이건표 교수님의 유창한 영어와 화려한 ppt프리젠테이션으로 시작된 발표는 상품기획의
측면에서 고려해햐 할 여러 사안을 지적하고 있었고, 주최측에 미리 전달되었던 발표자료가
분실되었음에도 당황하지 않고 침착하게 ppt 화면없이 발표를 진행한 오경순 수석님의
발표, 그리고 종이책과 비교하여 전자책의 미래를 제시하고자 하였던 나의 발표가 모두
공통적으로 지적하고 있었던 내용은, 소니의 Librie는 아직 너무도 초기단계의 전자책에
불과하다는 부분이었다. 한마디로, 고객(그중에서도 정보통신분야의 최첨단을 달리고
있는 한국의 고객)의 기대를 충족시키기에는 아직 갈길이 먼 E-Book이라는 것이
세 패널들의 공통적인 의견이었던 것으로 기억된다.

관객들의 여러 사안에 대한 질문들과 이에 대한 우키타씨로부터의 답변들이 있었지만
아직은 충분한 해결점을 제시하지 못하고 있는 것이 사실인 듯 하였다.
마지막 질문자로서 내가 던진 내용은, 아직은 greyscale에 한정된 정지된 화면을
근간으로 하고 있지만 독자들의 기대는 이에 만족하지 못하므로 Librie에 칼라가
도입되는 시점과 멀티미디어적인 컨텐츠를 가능하게 하는 프로그램적인 여건에
대한 질문이었다. 전자책을 위한 컨텐츠 개발의 측면에서, 디자이너로서 도전감을
느끼고는 있지만 디자이너들이 결과물로 제공할 수 있는 Quicktime이나 Flash 등의
화일을 열어 볼 수 있는 프로그램적인 여건이 제공되지 않는다면 현실적인 여건상
디자이너들이 자유롭게 이 전자책의 발전적인 미래를 위해 개입할 수 있는 여지는
희박해 보이기 때문이었다.

우키타씨의 대답은 이러하였다.
'Librie에 칼라가 도입되는 시점은 앞으로 2년 후 정도, 그리고 멀티미디어적인
컨텐츠를 Librie에 적용하는 점에 대해서는 아직 결정된 바가 없다. 많은 Sony의
제품들이 기능적인 다양성을 지니고 있으나, 워크맨이나 워크맨 시디롬처럼 단일
기능을 고집하는 제품들이 그 나름대로의 성공이유를 가지고 있듯이 리브리에 역시,
'책'이 지닌 고유의 기능에 충실한 그런 환경을 위해 노력하는 것이 현재까지의
목표이다...'

물론, 소니는 E-ink기술을 근간으로 시장을 선점하는 데에 우선적인 목적을 두었을
것이고, 이어 많은 사안들을 개선해 나갈 것이다. 그리고, 그 과정에서 사람들은
소니의 생각에 설득당하기도 하고, 사람들의 기대와 필요를 충족시키기 위해 소니는
원래의 방향을 조금씩 수정해나가기도 할 것이다. 그리고, 그 모든 과정을 통해 인류의
새로운 독서문화를 위한 '전자책'의 원형이 정립되어갈 것이다,,,
