장예모 감독의 '꿈'

영화 <연인>의 제작과정 다큐멘터리 기록에 의하면, <연인>의 마지막 장면에 대한
장예모 감독의 꿈이 이루어졌다면 그 장면은 눈밭이 아닌 꽃밭이었을 것이라 했다.
그리고 그랬다면, 벌판에 가득 핀 노랑 빨강 보라 분홍의 꽃들 사이에서 세 연인은 가슴
아픈 운명의 갈림길을 떠나게 되었을 것이고, 그것은 컴퓨터그래픽에 의해 다소 과장된
눈보라 치는 벌판에서의 장면보다 훨씬 더 사람들의 가슴을 파고드는 마지막 장면이
되었을 것이다.

그는 이 마지막 장면에 대한 꿈을 실현하기 위하여 촬영이 시작되기 1년 전 기후조건이
보다 호의적인 우크라이나로 날아가 원하는 여건의 들판을 찾고, 원하던 바로 그런
느낌의 꽃을 골라 10만 묘의 꽃을 심어 마음 속에 그리던 '꽃밭'을 만들 것을 계획하였다.
그러나, 일년 후 촬영을 위해 찾아간 꽃밭은 그의 기대에 못미치고, 이것을 극복하기 위해
온갖 방법을 동원하여 꽃밭 촬영을 시도해보지만 결코 그의 기대를 충족하지는 못한다.
설상가상으로 빨리 찾아 온 '눈'으로 인해 <연인>은 촬영 중단의 위기에 놓인다. 결국,
이 시점에서 감독은 마지막 장면에 대한 애초의 계획을 변경, 꽃밭대신 눈밭에서 마지막
장면을 촬영할 것을 결정하게 된다.

빨리빨리 꽃만 많이 팔면 그만인 우크라이나의 시골 사람들에게 자신이 원하는 꽃의
모양과 색깔, 키 등을 설명하고 또 설명하던 감독의 모습, 꽃밭을 위한 계약상의
소홀했던 부분에 대해 계약을 담당하였던 스탭을 다그치고 또 다그치던 감독의 모습,
그 꽃밭이 제대로 일구어지도록 중간중간 돌봐야 할 사항들을 당부하고 또 당부하던
감독의 모습, 우려하였던대로(그는 영화 <붉은 수수밭>을 통해 이미 비슷한 상황을
경험했던 바이다) 꿈꾸던 꽃밭과는 전혀 거리가 먼 꽃밭을 보고 망연자실하여 또 다른
꽃밭을 찾기위해 헤매고 또 헤매던 감독의 모습, 자연의 뜻을 거스르는 대신 그것을
자연이 준 기회로 활용하기로 마음을 고쳐먹던 순간의 감독의 모습, 촬영 도중에
발생한 여러 역경의 과정들을(급기야는 주인공 금성무가 촬영도중 말에서 떨어져
말타는 장면을 더이상 촬영할 수 없게 된다) 헤쳐나가며 현실(영화촬영의 하루하루는
모두 막대한 '돈'을 의미한다)과 꿈 사이에 얽혀 있는 실타래를 풀어가며 한걸음씩 꿈을
향해 도전해나가던 감독의 모습...

엄청난 장비와 인원으로 구성된 팀의 스탭들이 감독의 지휘하에 한 몸의 지체가 되어
저마다의 역힐을 철저히 해주어야만 가능한 일이 바로 영화를 만드는 일이고, 그들에게
분명한 'decision'과 'direction'을 주는 것이 바로 감독의 역할이다.
이루고자 하는 구체적인 '꿈'이 있고, 감독으로서의 경험과 통찰력에 의거한 최선의
'decision'과 'direction'을 주어도 그 일이 스탭들에 의해 원활하게 이루어지지 않을
때마다 장예모 감독은 혼자말로 이렇게 중얼거리곤 했다.
"다, 마음이 없기 때문이야..."
그것이 왜 꼭 그런 색깔과 크기와 높이의 꽃들이 만발한 꽃밭이어야 하는지 꿈꾸던
그 꽃밭을 만들려면 사전에 무엇을 어떻게 점검하고 확인해야 하는지 그런 것들을
설명하고 또 설명해도 꿈을 이루기 위해 함께 절박한 마음이 되어주지 않는 사람들을
향해 그는 원망도 질책도 아닌 혼자말을 중얼거리는 것이다.
꿈의 꽃밭을 실현시키기 위해 1년전부터 준비하였던 그의 노력이 허사로 돌아가고
다른 방법을 찾기위해 애를 쓰던 중 예기치 않았던 첫눈으로 모든 것이 절망적이 되자
그는 그 스스로를 달래고 모두를 달래기 위해 또 혼자말을 중얼거린다.
"자연의 뜻을 거스를 수는 없는거야. 이건 하늘이 주신 기회인 거야..."
그리고, 그것은 타협이라기보다는 꿈을 포기하지 않기위한 그의 간절한 노력으로 보였다.

<연인>의 마지막 장면, 엇갈린 사랑으로 인하여 여인은 죽을 수밖에 없는 운명임을
알면서도 새로운 사랑을 선택하게 되고, 죽을 것을 알면서도 자신을 떠나가는 여인에
대한 애증 속에 결투를 벌이게 되는, 그리고 그로 인해 모두가 죽음으로 치닫게 되는
가슴아픈 결말의 장면-- 영화 속에서는 하염없는 눈이 세 연인을, 벌판을, 하얗게 덮어
가고 있었지만 나의 마음 속에는 그의 스탭들이 '마음'을 함께 하지 못했던, 그가 이루지
못했던, 그 꿈의 꽃밭이 펼쳐진다.
차갑고 싸늘한 눈대신, 벌판에 가득 핀 처연한 빛깔의 노랑 빨강 보라 분홍 꽃들의
무심한 흔들림을 통하여 연인들의 사랑과 운명에 대한 여운을 남기고 싶어하였을 그의
마음이 되어 함께 가슴이 아파진다.
육신의 모든 고통과 작별을 나누고 난 뒤 삶과 죽음의 마지막 경계를 넘는 연인들의 기억
속에 남겨진 삶은 어떤 모습이었을까. 연인들의 마음이 되어 그가 뒤돌아 본 인생은 분명
순간의 바람에 흔들리는 어여쁜 꽃과도 같았을 터이니...
