북경_06_천안문광장

2년만에 다시 오게된 천안문광장- 내게는 남다른 감회를 갖게 하는 곳이다.
천안문광장을 처음 본 것은 우리 가족이 디트로이트에 머물던
1989년의 초여름, TV화면을 통해서이다.
연일 뉴스의 특보를 통해 보도되던 천안문사태 관련의 TV화면 속에서는
자유와 민주를 부르짖는 수없이 많은 젊은이들이 피흘리며 죽어가고 있었다.
어떤 이들에게는 죽음을 불사하고 쟁취해야 하는 자유가
어떤 이들에게는 태어날 때부터 죽을 때까지 집안의 안락한 거실소파로
배달되는 당연한 권리인 것이 절대 당연할 수가 없다는 이율배반이
많은 이들의 가슴 속을 휘저었던 그 때의 기억이 생생하다.
프리랜서로 일하고 있던 나에게 어느 날 문득 찾아와 내게 '自由'라는
글자의 캘리그래피를 의뢰하였던 Larry Black과의 만남, 나의 '자유'
디자인을 근간으로 투자가를 얻어 회사를 차렸던 일, 그리고 그 디자인이
결국 뉴욕의 Macy's 백화점으로부터 60만불어치의 주문을 받게된 일,
그러나 기대이상의 성과는 오히려 투자가들 사이에 욕심과 분란을 일으켰고
결국은 합일점을 찾지 못하므로 눈앞의 행운을 날려버리게 되었던 일 등...

그것이 벌써 15년전의 일이 되어버렸고, 지금의 천안문 광장에서 그때의
'피'의 흔적을 발견할 수 없듯이 그때의 치열했던 내 인생의 경험도
기억 속에만 존재할 뿐이다. 그때나 지금이나 달라지지 않은 나의 믿음은
나의 'freedom'디자인의 핵심 역할을 하였던 자유를 정의하는 나의
한마디 말과 같다.
Of his own accord, man thinks and acts.
그렇다. 자유란, 인간의 스스로 생각하고 행동하는 힘이다.
행동이 수반되지 않는 생각은 자유가 아닌 것이다...
