북경에 다녀와 정신을 좀 차릴 수 있게 된 즈음 우연히 신문을 뒤적이다가 숭산스님의
입적소식을 처음 접하게 되었다. 그 날 오후 다비식이 거행된다는 내용의 기사를
접하므로 깜짝 놀라 인터넷을 통해 지난 11월 30일 입적하셨다는 사실을 알아 내고는
위대한 선승의 죽음일지라도 나처럼 신문이나 TV와 친하지 않은 사람에게는
아무런 흔적없이 지나갈 수도 있는 일이었겠다는 사실에 충격을 금치 못하였다.
숭산스님은 우리가 숭산스님의 책을 네 권이나 디자인하였다는 사실 이외에도
나의 각별한 영적인 친구- 현각스님의 스승이시라는 점에 있어서, 사랑하고 존경하는
'아버지'를 떠나 보내는 친구를 위로하는 마음의 차원에서 보더라도 나에게 역시 절대
무심한 일이 될 수는 없는 일이다.

장례운구를 화계사에서 수덕사로 옮겨 큰스님의 다비식을 거행하는 날,
하루종일 내리는 비로 어려움을 겪지 않겠나 잠시 걱정을 하기도 하였으나,
생각해보면 위대한 선사의 다비식을 위해 그만큼 완벽한 날씨조건도 없을 듯 싶었다.
스승과 제자가 모두 한 몸이 되는 경험을 선물하시려는 큰 뜻이 있을 듯도 싶었다.

오늘 스승의 장례식을 무사히 마치고 친구들에게 보내는 현각스님의 메일을 받고,
이제야 위로의 마음을 전하게 되었다. 사실 위로라는 말보다는 숭산스님과 나누었던
현각스님의 그 특별한 인연에 대한 의미를 다시 한번 새기는 말이었지만...
그가 보내온 사진들을 통하여 함께 하지 못하였던 위대한 선사의 '무'로 돌아가는
순간의 감동을 헤아려 본다...
