아름다운 청년 전태일과 나의 한글 타이포그래피 실험

(2003년 3월 매거진 정글의 리더스 다이어리에 게재하였던 글을 다시 옮긴다.)

타이포그래피에 있어서 나의 최대한의 관심사는 '말'이 지닌 느낌을 어떻게 '글'로 표현할 수 있느냐의 것이다.
'말'을 통하여 전달하고자 하는 모든 것- 즉, 숨겨져 있는 내면의 표현까지를 포함하여 말이 지닌 내용과 느낌,
목소리의 색깔 및 높낮이, 빠르거나 느린 정도 등을 이용하여 전달되는 모든 것을 어떻게 '글'이 지닌 요소로
전환하는가의 관점이 될 것이다. 그러므로, 책을 디자인하는 일에 있어서 타이포그래피에 대한 나의 최대한의
관심사는 책이 말하고 싶어하는 이야기를 표현하기에 적절한 '목소리'를 구현하는 일이라고 설명할 수 있을 것 같다.

1997년 부산영화제를 몇 달 앞두고 영화 <아름다운 청년, 전태일>의 사진집을 의뢰받았고, 이 책의 디자인을
위해 가장 중요한 조건으로 요청했던 것은 다름아닌 책의 구성에 대한 전권을 디렉터인 내가 갖는 일이었다.
물론 그것은 당연한 요청이기도 하겠지만, 이 책이 영화에 종속된 사진집으로서가 아니라, 독자적인 생명력을
지닌 하나의 '책'으로서 탄생되기를 강렬히 원했으므로 이를 단단히 못박아두고 싶은 이유에서였다.
그런 의미에서 나의 <아름다운 청년, 전태일>은 단순한 영화 스틸사진집이 아니다....

이 프로젝트를 위해 건네어 받은 것은 촬영의 전기간동안 곁에서 함께 촬영된 스틸사진들로 장장 3천 점이 넘는
분량이었다. 이는 편집을 위해 한꺼번에 늘어놓고 보는 일조차가 불가능한, 실로 대단한 양의 사진인 것이다.
사진집을 만들 때의 편집작업은 크게 두가지로 분류된다. 사진의 흐름의 만드는 일과 텍스트의 흐름을 만드는 일.
그리고, 이 두가지의 흐름이 상호간에 어떤 영향을 주고받도록 할 것인가를 기획하는 일이 사진집을 디자인하는
일의 핵심작업임은 두 말할 나위가 없다.
사진 안에 포함되어있는 여러가지 시각적인 단서들- 그것이 이야기를 구성하기 위한 구체적이고 객관적인
확실한 단서이거나, 모호하고 주관적인, 매우 미약한 실마리에 불과할지라도 디자이너의 합리성과 창의성이
결탁하여 그것을 어떠한 설득력있는 메세지로 만들어낼 것인가에 바로 '편집디자인'의 묘미가 놓여져있으며
스토리텔러로서의 디자이너의 숨은 재능을 마음껏 발휘할 수 있게 되는 것이다.

사진을 편집하는 일을 '잘 찍은 사진' 위주로 사진을 고르는 일이라고만 믿고 있다면 수없이 많은 잘 찍은 사진들을
편집하는 일은 대단히 고통스러운 작업이 될 것이다. 무엇을 취하고 무엇을 버릴 것인가. 어떤 것이 서슴없이
취할만큼 잘 된 사진이며 어떤 것이 과감히 버릴만큼 안 좋은 사진인가... 그것을 결정하기 위한 공정한 기준을
고민하는 사이 그 책을 위한 'what'이나 'how'를 위한 본질의 문제는 방향을 잃게 된다. 순간순간 들쭉날쭉
변하는 '잘찍은 사진'에 대한 기준으로 스스로도 확신할 수 없는 책임을 면하기 위해 결국은 우유부단한 심정으로
버리기 보다는 남기는 쪽을 선택하게 되고, 이럴 수도 저럴 수도 없는 사진들로 화면은 자꾸 자꾸 분할이 되어
군더더기 없이 간결한, 또는 강렬한 감동과는 거리가 먼 편집이 되기 일쑤이다.

늘 그렇듯, 디자인에 앞서 필수로 몰입하는 작업은 바로 내 스스로가 주인공이 되어보는 '감정이입'의 작업이고,
이를 위해 그가 남긴 생전의 일기장(대학노트 서너 권 분량의 글들)과 다양한 저자에 의해 책으로 묶여져 나온
평전 등을 읽으며 나는 그 누구도 개입하지 않은 나와 전태일, 일대 일의 만남을 통한 그의 목소리에 귀를
기울이고자 하였다. 그가 남긴 많은 글들... 신중하고도 소신있는 단어와 단어의 연결 속에 한 젊은이의 삶에
대한 충실한 의지와 희망으로 나의 가슴이 벅차올랐다면 행과 행 사이로 막 빠져나가려는 한 젊은이의 사회에
대한 불가항력의 절망과 고통이 나의 가슴을 아프고 또 아프게 하였다.
그의 글은 수려한 문장력을 자랑하고 있지는 않으나 수려하였고, 그 원동력은 다름아닌 젊은이로서의 삶에
대한 아름다운 투지였으니 그 모든 것에 기실 내가 개입할 여지는 전혀 없을 정도였다. 디자인이란 것이 본질에
군더더기와 같은 사족을 다는 일이 되어버린다면 그처럼 아름다운 청년 전태일의 의지에 반하는 일이 없을
것이기 때문이다.

나는 이 책을 이 땅의 노동자들의 뜻을 세상에 전하기 위한 방법으로 분신을 감행할 수밖에 없었던 열사 전태일의
뜻에 가장 충실한 책으로 만들 것을 결심하였다. 영화에서는 주인공격이나 책을 위해서는 사실 군더더기일 수
밖에 없는 나레이터 문성근과 그의 애인역을 모두 들어내어버리기로 결정, 청년 전태일의 일기장에서 발췌한
전태일 자신의 글을 이용한 별도의 맥락을 만들어 사진 편집 작업의 기준으로 삼았다. 따라서 이 사진집에서는
영화의 주인공이었던 문성근의 사진을 별로 찾아볼 수가 없다.

아무도 들어주지 않았던 그의 이야기를 책에서라도 목청껏 외치게 하고픈 생각에 본문 활자의 크기를 대폭
키워 최저 20포인트부터 최고 230포인트까지를 과감히 본문 텍스트에 사용하였다. 물론 이와 같은 설정이
가능하도록 책의 판형을 타블로이드 사이즈로 선택한 것부터가 같은 맥락의 결정이었을 것이다. 0.1%의 미미한
부분를 제외하고는 책전체를 통하여 sm신명조체 한가지만의 서체를 사용한 것도 이 책의 흥미로운 점이다.
아름다웠던 청년, 故전태일의 영전에 드리는 마음으로 텍스트의 타이핑에서부터 사진 편집, 디자인 및 제작의
전과정을 남의 손을 빌리지 않고 모두 직접 작업하였던 점도 이 책에 각별한 애정을 품게된 이유이다.

2001년 서울 디자인미술관에서 개최되었던 '타이포잔치(서울 타이포비엔날레)'에 초청전시작가로 초대받았을
때 나의 출품작으로 '아름다운 청년, 전태일'을 결정함에 있어서 그리 많은 갈등을 겪지 않았다. 세계적인
거장 디자이너들의 작품이 대거 전시되는 이 자리에 도대체 나는 어떠한 작업으로 디자이너로서의 나의
아이덴티티를 명확히 할 것인가. 나는 그간의 다양한 작업들의 나열함으로 나의 아이덴티티에 대한 안전한
보루를 쌓기보다는 하나의 강렬한 메시지와 이미지를 통해 디자이너로서의 나의 작업을 대변하고 싶은 생각이
더욱 강해지며, 바로 이 '아름다운 청년, 전태일'이야말로 나의 이와같은 욕구를 충족시키기에 부족함이 없는
작업이라는 결론에 이르렀기 때문이다. 다만 좀 독특한 방법의 전시형태를 생각하게 되었는데 2권의 책을 이용,
책을 분해한 후 내용을 선별하여 좀더 축약된 흐름을 만들어 전시장 내의 한면의 벽을 가득 메워 한눈에 책의
내용을 감상할 수 있도록 하였다. 이러한 전시 방법 역시 아무도 들어주지 않았던 그의 이야기를 관람객을
향해 마음껏 외치게 하고픈 내 나름대로의 바람이 있었기 때문일 것이다.

아아... 그렇게 찾아도 없던 책인데, 이 사진들을 보니 더욱 안타깝네요. 김영수 선생님이 강의하시는 한국예술종합학교 다니고 있거든요. 정인숙 선생님 말씀으로는 학교측에 책 몇권을 주셨다고 하는데, 정작 도서관에서는 찾을 수가 없더라구요. 분실되기라도 한 건지... 좋은 책은 절판되지 않고 한 20년간 조금씩이라도 나오면 저같이 뒤늦게 찾는 사람들은 정말 좋을텐데 말입니다.
