떠도는, '떠도는 섬'

회의 때 최민, 김영일 님이 참석, 작업의 원론적인 부분에 대한 사안이 거론되었다.
파노라마 포맷과 35mm 포맷의 사진이 함께 존재하므로 발생하게 되는 책의 물리적인
여건 안에서 35mm의 사진이 상대적으로 작게 느껴지는 부분 때문에 시작된 토론은
급기야 사진가 김영수의 작업의 정체성에 관한 부분으로 이어졌고, 그것이 35mm가
아닌 파노라마여서는, 작가의 작업을 대변하기에 적절치 못하다는 의견이 힘을 얻게
되므로, 책의 편집작업은 원점으로 되돌려지게게 되었다.
여러 '사공'들의 저마다의 '노젓기'에 정작 작가 자신은 소신을 정하는 일이 어려우신
듯 하고, 가뜩이나 건강 상태가 좋지 않은데, 거의 쓰러지시기 일보 직전이다.
하지만, '35mm vs. 파노라마'에 대한 사안은 나역시 긍정하는 바이다. 파노라마
사진의 '가벼움'에 대한 우려의 시각은 모두 작가 김영수의 작업에 존재해온 마땅한
'무거움'에 대한 존경과 애정의 마음일 것이다.
시간이 얼마 남지 않았으므로, 작업에 속도를 내야 할 듯 하다. 35mm 사진 중심으로
판형을 새롭게 정하는 일, 책의 사진 편집을 새롭게 정리하는 일, 그럼에도 불구하고
파노라마 사진을 최대한으로 살리는 방법을 새롭게 강구해야할 듯 하다.

한가지, 나의 글에 대하여(물론 작가의 요청에 의해 쓴 글이다)-
'디자이너'가 글을 쓰는 것이 마땅치 않다는 '사공'들의 의견에 의해 나의 글은 책 안에
자리를 얻지 못하게 되었다. '디지털' 운운의 사안을 언급하는 것이 '긁어 부스럼'이 될
것이라는 우려 때문이기도 할 것이다. 김영수 선생님은 여러모로 내게 미안해 하시지만,
이 모든 문제의 결론을 나의 결정에 맡기겠다고 하시지만,
흠... 이것이야말로 '디자이너의 정체성'에 대한 원론적인 문제를 제기하고 있지 않은가.

하지만, 나는 작가 김영수의 이번 사진작업에 대해 '하고 싶은' 말이 있었던 것이고
'쓰고 싶어서' 썼던 글이니 내 표현의 자유를 위해 누군가의 동의가 필요한 것은
아닐 것이다...

<아날로그와 디지털, 떠도는 사진의 미래를 비추다_
사진가 김영수의 디지털 프린트 작업에 관련하여>

2-3년 전 어느 날 인사동 작업실을 방문하였을 때 그가 문득 물어왔다. 인화된 사진을
스캔하여 대형 사이즈의 디지털 프린트로 재현하는 방식을 설명하였고, 그에 대한 나의
의견을 궁금해했던 것이다. 물론, 이 질문에 숨어있는 그의 궁금증의 하나는 아날로그
방식의 사진작업에 디지털 프린트 방식을 접목하는 것에 대한 어떤 '윤리적' 측면에 대한
외부적 시각에 놓여 있었을 것이다. 누구보다도 자신의 작업에 대해 분명한 의지를
가져온 그에게 왜 그러한 방식의 행보가 필요한 지에 대해서는 질문이나 대답의 여지가
필요치 않았을 것이기 때문에.
그 때의 즉발적인 나의 대답은, '당연하고도 기대가 되는 일이다'였다. 그의 작업에
있어서 디지털 방식의 재현을 접목시키는 것은 흑백인화지 작업을 결론으로 두지 않고
한 단계의 실험적인 프린트 방식을 거쳐 그것을 결론적인 작업으로 삼겠다는 것에 다름
아닌 것이니, 그러한 일에 어떤 윤리적 측면이 개입하고 말 여지가 없다고 느꼈뿐만
아니라, 아날로그와 디지털의 가교 역할을 하게 될 그의 새로운 실험이 진심으로 기대가
되었기 때문이다.
그러나, 그의 질문이 던지고 있는 보다 근원적인 지적은 '디지털'에 의해 교란당하는
'아날로그'의 정체성에 대한 중요한 몇가지 사안에 놓여 있다는 것을 모르지 않는다.
무엇이 진정한 아날로그인가, 그것이 꼭 디지털이어야 한다면 어떠한 전환의 방식을
선택할 수 있을 것인가…. 이것은 2-3년 전 그와 주고 받았던 잠깐의 대화 속에 웅크리고
있던 '변화의 시대'를 향한 질문이었으며, 오늘 그의 '떠도는 섬' 작업을 통해 그가
세상에게 가르쳐 주고 싶은 하나의 대답이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

'디지털'이라는 새로운 개념이 사람들의 생활 속에 급속도로 전파되면서, '아날로그'를
기반으로 쌓아온 그간의 것들이 디지털에 의해 한 순간에 헐값에 팔려나갈 것을 두려워
하는 이들에 의해 '아날로그 vs. 디지털'로 매사를 양분화하여 구분해 내는 새로운
'안경'이 유행하게 되고, 인류의 오랜 삶의 근간이었던 아날로그적 방식의 보전을 둘러싼
의식있는 사람들 축에 끼고 싶어하는 사람들은 최신 유행의 이 안경을 착용하기
시작하였다. 그러나 막연히 유행을 따르고자 하는 류들의 감각이 그러하듯 이 안경의
렌즈가 얼마나 믿을만한 품질을 가지고 있는가에 관심을 지니기보다는 시대에 뒤떨어
지지 않는 감각을 흉내내는 데 목적을 두다 보니, 사진작업의 '아날로그 vs. 디지털'의
논란에 있어서도 아날로그의 본질이 와전된 채 무턱대고 디지털을 공격하는 경우를
자주 목격하게 된다.
그 공격의 논지를 극단적으로 요약하자면 수동카메라로 찍으면 아날로그이고 디지털
카메라로 찍으면 디지털인 것인데, 디지털 사진에 동조하는 것은 경박한 짓이고
아날로그 사진만이 진정한 사진이라는 것이다. 이러한 논란의 특징 중의 하나는
자동으로 작동되는 수동카메라로 찍은 필름을 45분 칼라현상소에 던져주는 것이 과연
아날로그 작업인가를 스스로 질문하지 않 듯, 사진 작업의 어떤 부분이 왜 디지털일 수
있는가에 대해 깊이 고민하지 않는다.

그러나 이러한 논란에 함께 휩쓸리기 이전에, 문제는 '안경'이 아니라 자신의 고유의
'시각'으로 바라보는 '눈'에 놓여 있는 것이고, 눈은 다름아닌 '몸'의 일부라는 것을
기억하지 않을 수 없다. 몸은 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 생각하는지의 총체적인 집합체이며
눈은 몸과 마음이 주고 받는 총체적인 삶의 방식에 의해 결정되는 고유한 시각을 지니게
되는 것이니, 사진은 렌즈를 통과하는 빛에 의해 사물을 받아들이는 것이지만 그
대상으로서의 사물을 결정하는 것은 눈이라는 것, 그 눈은 바로 그 사람의 시각이며, '
사진을 찍는다'는 것은 바로 그 사람이 '무엇을 보는가'에 의해 결정되는 것이라는 점을
잊지 않는다면 아날로그의 본질을 보호하고 보전하기 위해 무엇을 어떻게 해야 할 지에
있어서 무턱대고 시야를 흐리게 하는 논란은 기실 개입의 여지가 없어 보인다.

8년에 가까운 세월동안 80여 개의 섬을 떠돌아 다니며 그 결론을 만들어 내는 작업에
있어서 무엇이 그를 갑작스레 '디지털'의 언저리를 기웃거리게 하였을까. 그러나
이것은 또한, 그의 '섬 사진'들을 본 사람이라면, 또한 아날로그의 본질에 대한 이해를
명확히 하고 있는 사람이라면 그의 작업의 중심을 읽는 데에 큰 노력이 필요치 않다는
것을 알게 된다. 대기 중에 가득한 '물'로 하늘과 바다의 구분조차 뚜렷치 않은 막연한
허공 속에 나타났다 사라지는 섬. 형체조차 분명하지 않은 그 대상의 무엇을 기준으로
촛점을 맞추었다 할 것이며 그러므로 무엇을 찍었다 할 것인가.
사진기를 들었으니, 셔터를 눌렀으니 사진을 찍는 것이 분명할테지만 그는 무엇을 그가
찍은 섬사진이라 보여줄 것인가. 수시로 바뀌는 기후조건에 수도 없이 비를 맞으며
그는 끝없이 떠도는 섬들을 바라보았을 것이고, 비가 아니어도 피부에 달라붙을 정도의
그 '물기'를 온 몸으로 흡수하며, 도대체 그가 느낀 그 섬을 어떻게 파인더 안에 끌어들일
것이며 어떻게 프린트 속에 재현해낼 것인지를 고민하며 8년이라는 시간을 떠돌았을
것이다. 작업실과 섬들 사이를 오가며 암실작업을 통하여 드러나게 되었을 그의 고민도
예측이 어렵지는 않다. 평생 흑백사진을 고집하며 프린트 작업과 씨름해 온 그의
암실에서의 경험과 노하우가 부족했다면 그것은 아직 절망이 아니었을 것이다.
인화지의 표면이 지닌 질감의 한계, 인화지의 지면이 지닌 크기의 한계… 그의 섬
작업을 완성시키기에는 턱없이 부족한 인화지가 지닌 한계의 지점에서 그는 떠돌고
또 떠돌았을 것이다.

이 때 그에게 '디지털'이 나타난 것이다. 그가 본 것을 재현해내기 위해 보다 성능이
좋은 사진기나 렌즈가 필요했다면 어떻게든 그 기계를 손에 넣으려고 애를 썼을
것이고, 보다 더 나은 현상액이나 인화지나 있다면 그것을 구해 실험하려 했을 것인
것처럼 디지털 프린트 방식은 그에게 하나의 '재료'로서의 가능성을 보여준, 반드시
손에 넣어 실험해 보고 싶은 대상으로 그의 앞에 나타났던 것이다.
그가 실험한 작업의 프로세스는 이와 같다. 11 X 14 크기의 광택지에 인화한 사진을
스캔하여 이것을 디지털프린터를 이용, 다양한 종이 위에 프린트하며 인화지 상에서
도저히 재현해낼 수 없었던 섬 주변의 공기, 그 물기 가득한 공기를 가장 가까이
재현해낼 수 있는 종이를, 종이와 디지털 프린터와의 호의적인 인터렉션(interaction)을
찾아내는 것이다. 이때의 '작업'이란 디지털프린터와 종이와의 인터렉션을 관찰하며
데이터를 스캔하는 과정에 발생할 수 있는 이익과 손실을 역으로 가늠하며 스캔작업을
여러 단계의 레벨로 나누어 조절하는 일이 될 것이다. 필름을 현상, 인화하는 과정에서
발생하는 빛의 정도와 시간의 정도를 조절하며 결과를 가늠하는 다양한 시도와 다르지
않은 작업인 것이다. 물론, 아날로그의 핵심 세대인 그가 이 모든 과정을 컴퓨터로 능수
능란하게 다루었을 리는 없고 이 부분의 작업을 전문으로 하는 누군가의 도움을 받아야
했겠지만, 궁극적으로 재현하고자 하는 이미지를 통해 '무엇을 추구하는가(what to
pursue)'의 작가의 관점이 작업을 위한 방향을 결정하였을 것이다.
그러나, 이 모든 작업은 인화지 상에서 결론에 이른 '베스트 프린트'를 대전제로 하고
있다는 점을 간과하여서는 안 될 것이다. 즉, 기존의 아날로그 방식의 사진작업에 있어서
조금도 부족함 없이 원하는 작업의 결과물을 얻어낼 수 있는 능력을 지닌 사진가가
아니라면 디지털 프린트를 위한 시도는 애초에 의미없는 작업일 것이라는 말이다.

500만 화소의 디카폰이 출몰하는 시대에 진정한 '디지털'에 대한 규정이 필요할 듯 하여
설명을 더하자면 이와 같다. 수동카메라로 찍은 35mm 필름으로 만들어진 영상을
재현하자면 최소 1300만 화소급의 데이터가 필요하고, 현재 디지털카메라의 최고
기종이 만들어낼 수 있는 데이터는 6-700만 화소를 넘지 않는다. 물론 이 때 디카폰에서
말하는 500만화소 같은 것이 얼마나 '무늬만' 500만 화소인지에 대해서는 설명을 더하는
것이 무의미하다. 35mm 필름의 경우가 이와 같은데 중형, 혹은 대형카메라로 촬영한
이미지의 퀄리티를 디지털 카메라로 재현하는 일이 얼마나 요원한 일인가를 설명하는
것 역시 현재의 상황에서는 무의미할 수 있다.
따라서, 그의 사진작업은 현상황에서 아날로그 방식과 디지털 방식간의 이와 같은 허와
실을 반영, 아날로그 작업의 결과물로서의 베스트 프린트를 전제로 하여 이것을 사안에
맞게 디지털화함으로 최종결과물 상의 아날로그적인 감성의 재현을 위해 보다 폭넓은
선택의 자유를 확보하고자 함에 다름이 아니다. 이것은 그의 섬사진을 위해 그가
표현하고자 하였던 부분- 섬 주변의 가득했던 그 '물기 가득한 공기'를 표현하기 위해
찾아낸 최선의 솔루션임이 분명하다.

무엇을 아날로그라, 무엇을 디지털이라 규명하는가. 아날로그 세대에게 디지털이
얼마나 큰 충격과 변화를 초래하였다 하더라도 이것은 이제 시작에 불과할 뿐 우리는
아직 디지털의 끝을 만나지 못하였고, 디지털과 대비되는 것의 시각에서 아날로그를
규정하고자 한다면, 아날로그의 끝 역시 아직 확인되지 못한 바이다. 그 누구도
어디서부터 어디까지가 아날로그라 섣불리 단언할 수 없는 세대에 살고 있는 것이다.
문명이 발달함에 따라 'how'로서의 삶의 방식은 부단히 변화할 것이고, 굳건하다고
믿었던 'what'으로서의 본질도 노력하지 않는다면 퇴색될 것이 분명하다. 아날로그가
중요한 것은 인간의 존재방식이 바로 그러하므로 그것을 잃지 않겠다는 인간의 의지와
노력에 다름 아닌 것이겠지만 인간에게 그것을 위한 무한한 시간이 주어지지 않았다는
점 역시 아날로그의 특성임은 아이러니가 아닐 수 없다. 사진 작업에 있어서 아날로그의
확실한 끝를 붙잡고 있다고 믿는 세대에게 있어서 그것을 다음 세대에 전하고 남기기위한
방법을 찾아내지 못한다면 그는 다만 인간의 수명의 한계를 탓하며 돌아갈 것이다.
한 순간 존재하였으되 남지 않는 것은 사라질 뿐인 것이다.

태어나면서부터 컴퓨터와 인터넷과 MP3 플레이어와 디지털카메라를 사용하는
세대에게 '아날로그'는 과연 어떤 모습으로 전달될 수 있을 것인가. 그것을 다시 라디오와
편지와 축음기와 수동카메라와 같은 것으로 되돌린다고 해서 그들이 아날로그의 본질을
이해하게 되는 것은 아닐 것이다. 사진기의 발명에 즈음하여 '그린다는 행위'를 대치하게
될 '찍는다는 행위'의 불경함을 이유로 사실적 묘사에 의한 그림만이 지닐 수 있는
'아날로그성'을 주장하여 사진기를 빼앗고 붓과 물감을 쥐어 준다고 해서 사진기의 발전을
막을 수 없었을 것처럼, 디지털의 발전과 디지털에 의한 변화는 아무도 막을 수 없는 일이
되었다. 설사 막을 수 있다 하여도 그것이 인류의 미래를 위해 반드시 좋은 일일 것인가에
대하여는 아무도 장담할 수 없는 일이기도 하다.
결과적으로, 붓과 물감 대신 사진기를 손에 쥔 사람들이 모두 기계처럼 보고 기계처럼
생각하지 않았다는 것을, 사진기를 이용하여 그림보다 더욱 아날로그적인 실체들을
찾아내고 재현해온 것을 상기한다면, 디지털로의 변환기에서 우리가 우려해야 할 것은
'디지털화' 그 자체가 아님을 이해해야만 한다. 아날로그는 하드웨어의 문제가 아닌,
인간 본연의 감성의 문제임을 이해하여야만 한다.

김영수가 그의 사진을 통해, 보다 정확히 말해 그의 디지털 프린트 작업을 통해 얻고자
했던 것은 바로 차가운 인화지 표면 위에 '체온'을 불어넣기위한 것이었음을 우리는
주목해야 한다. 사진에 '체온'을 불어넣는 일이야말로 그가 후세에 전하고 싶은
'아날로그'의 본질인 것이고, 아날로그 세대의 핵심인 그가 낯설은 디지털 방식을
기꺼이 습득하고자 했던 것은 사진가로서 또한 기성세대로서 그가 믿는 가장 소중한
것을 다음 세대에게 전하고 싶은 간절한 마음, 바로 그것이었을 것이다.
